Initially meeting at a music festival in San Francisco, Anna Sui encountered Jane’s Addiction and former Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro at a party later that evening, where Sui asked for his thoughts on appearing in one of her runway shows. Navarro agreed on the condition that it would be a lingerie centred look. Navarro later appeared in the Spring 1997 show, alongside supermodel powerhouses Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, wearing custom leather trousers and jacket, with a silky camisole that remains an iconographic image to date. Navarro memorably said to Sui “You’re the artist and I’m your clay. Mold me.”Don’t try this at home is a diaristic presentation of life in nineties Hollywood, that features a series of photo booth images Navarro insisted his guests participated in, resulting in shots from Billy Corgan, Flea, Rose McGowan, Keanu Reeves, and Leonardo DiCaprio, to lesser known faces who passed through the residency, resulting in a candid yet absurd portrait of Navarro’s rockstar lifestyle.
